I have an old Sony CD megachanger. I am using the RCA outs of the CD changer into my RCA preamp ins. Standard.
The Sony does have an optical out as well.
Am I correct in my being able to buy a better DAC to improve my sound quality,....
by using the CD player as just a transport, and come from the optical out, into the optical in of a DAC,
and out of the RCA outs on the DAC, into my RCA ins of the preamp?
Baa-Daa-boom?
Just a quick confirmation from someone would be great.
Thanks in advance!!!!

You can certainly do what you propose but whether you will notice an improvement in sound quality may depend. You might have to get a fairly expensive DAC for it to be a big improvement over your Sony CD's internal DAC.  Also, you might need good quality loudspeakers to fully hear differences.
As I said in other threads on this topic, I have sampled 7 or 8 different DACs and each had its own distinct sound characteristics.  Some I liked and some I did not.  I remember one in particular (Mytek Brooklyn) that sounded fantastic for the first half hour or so with incredible detail but then it fatigued my ears by being way too dry and lacking in any richness.  I ended up keeping the PS Audio Directstream which is crazy expensive but I could not be happier.
Chances are that if you get a good quality DAC it will be an improvement over what you have now.

I figured that if I improved the quality of the source material, CD,  then I should gain.
I'm using a Pass Labs XP20 pre, with a Pass Labs 250.5 power amp, into MartinLogan Summit X speakers.
It appears worth the investment, I believe, as I can get the CD players cheap, if they break down.
I just wondered if this is how I should use a DAC.
THX~
