Appreciate some help on a good budget setup for a large hall (26ftx16ft). We listen mainly to music, and we entertain quite a bit. So am looking for speakers that will be able to fill the room with pop, jazz and some rock music. Our hall is a rectangle. Budget: US$3000. Some questions:
1) Where should I place my speakers?
2) How many speakers would you suggest? I'm thinking that just 2 in the front wld be too jarring for those nearby.
3) Should I consider wireless speaker systems?
Thanks for any suggestions!

Sorry, but I wouldn't consider a 26'x16' to be a large hall necessarily.  You can fill the room, quite well, with with a pair of 5"or 6" two way bookshelf speakers and maybe add a subwoofer.  Or, you can go larger.  Your budget will be influenced by a balance of "quality" and quantity.
Are you saying you want to use them for personal listening, party Muzak, or both?
Is this to be a 2 channel stereo system or do you want a surround system?
Is your $3000 budget for speakers only or is it inclusive of speakers, amplification, and a source?
With a 2 channel system inclusive of both speakers and amplification, there are a good many choices within your budget.

I would think a relatively powerful 4 ohm stereo amplifier running 2 stereo pairs in A+B might suffice.
This is a high power Yamaha that would be more than enough.

Four of these near but not exactly in the corners should give a nice spread of sound in that room without being too "bright."
Bass should be more than enough.

Will you have a microphone hooked to the system?
How loud does the music play?  Casual listening level, loud enough for dancing or rock concert levels?
If it is just a room to play background music, that is a rather simple build.  If it has microphones, announcements and dances then you need a completely different system.  $3K should cover from mild to wild so what components depends on what you are doing.

1) If no home theater use, a 4.1 or 4.0 setup with the speakers diagonally positioned at each corner.
2) Four, if you see yourself having a lot of parties where people are milling about the entire space.  If people will be sitting in fixed positions, two should be enough.  I would invest $600-900 on a good subwoofer to fill in the bass and give your receiver a break.
3) No.
